Waterloo ON / 2021

HOSPICE WATERLOO REGION.

Sitting on former agrarian lands, the Gies Family Centre was designed to integrate the various components of palliative care services under one roof.

Its form draws inspiration from past structures and is infused with a sense of continuity and rootedness in the land's heritage. By emphasizing domesticity over a clinical environment, the building fosters a comforting atmosphere for both patients and their families.

/ A central garden and reflection pond were designed to enhance the interior environment with tranquillity and opportunities for introspection.

The choice of materials for the exterior further reinforces a connection to the past while also celebrating the beauty of ageing and the passage of time that are intrinsic to the human condition.

The Gies Family Centre has established itself as a reference, setting the standard for future palliative care facilities in the region.
